AVON LAKE - The Lorain County Board of Elections certified on Dec. 19 the final results of the Dec. 6 mayoral runoff, confirming City Council President Greg Zilka?s victory over Mayor Karl (K.C.) Zuber.

Volunteer Section

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities: December 23-24 - Salvation Army volunteers - Community Resource Services needs more volunteers to ring the Salvation Army bell throughout the remainder of the holiday season. Open shifts include: Dec. 23 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Giant Eagle in Avon Lake; Dec. 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Walmart in Avon; Dec. 24 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Giant Eagle in Avon Lake; Dec. 24 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Walmart in Avon. Contact Kris Greene, Volunteer Coordinator, at 933-5639 ext. 205, if interested.

Community Events

DECEMBER 23 - Family Friday Night: Deer Are No Strangers - Cleveland Metropark Nature Center, Sunset Lane off SOM Center Road Mayfield, OH 44139. Our state mammal, the white-tailed deer, is a familiar backyard visitor. Take a short hike to look for their tracks after learning more about them. Back inside, enjoy the movie "Stranger in the Woods." End the evening toasting marshmallow at the fireplace. 7 PM.

DECEMBER 23-24 - Holiday Tours At Western Reserve Historical society - Holiday sights at WRHS will also include toy trains and historic ornaments, dollhouses and toys and the following museum exhibitions: Pics on Route 66: The photography of David J. Schwartz Do You Know Your Lincoln : Featuring the extensive WRHS Lincoln collection Under the Covers: Quilts from the WRHS collection Cleveland Perspectives: Watercolors from the WPA Project Kidzibits Family Education Center: Featuring hands-on activities for preschoolers Admission to Western Reserve Historical Society is $8.50 for adults; $7.50 for seniors; $5.00 for children (age 3-17); WRHS members and children age 2 & under are admitted free. Advance ticket for Hay-McKinney Mansion tour, which includes museum admission, is $10.00. Tickets may be purchased by phone (216-721-5722) or online (www.wrhs.org).

ONGOING - The Rink at Wade Oval - University Circle. Admission to The Rink is free, and skate rentals are $3. After visitors have finished skating, they can warm up with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate from the Wade Oval Information Center.
