Woodmere police chief resigns and department to see more changes

WOODMERE -- The village�s police chief has resigned and the police department may see some other changes soon. Mayor Charles Smith said Police Chief Terence Calloway recently resigned to take a job with a higher salary at Austin Peay University in Clarksville, Tenn. Smith said Calloway was making $58,000 a year with the Woodmere police department and he will now make between $80,000-$85,000 with benefits in his new position.

Volunteer Section

Volunteer Opportunities: Habitat For Humanity Jan. 19,20 - Habitat For Humanity needs volunteers to help packing up Ingersoll Hardware of Westlake and Rocky River for their ReStore. Boxing up goods, shrink wrapping palates and moving items are involved. Four to six helpers are needed between 9am and 4pm Thursday January 19th and Friday January 20th. Orientation will be at Habitat's headquarters, and is where volunteers will meet before work begins. Drinks and snacks are provided.

ONGOING - Chalet Toboggan Chutes - Valley Parkway between U.S. 42 and Ohio 82, Strongsville, OH 44136. All riders must wear gloves or mittens. Children must be at least 42 inches tall to ride, and must be accompanied by an adult. Personal toboggans are not allowed at the facility.

JANUARY 20- Lyceum Lecture - Kerry Gunther: Grizzlies - Happy Days Lodge, 500 W. Streetsboro Road (Ohio 303), one mile west of Ohio 8 Peninsula, OH 44264. Learn more from Yellowstone National Park wildlife biologist Kerry Gunther about grizzly bear behavior, resource management and educational techniques. Doors open at 6 p.m.

JANUARY 21 - Winterfest 2012 and Bicentennial Edition Snowmen Exhibit - Chardon Square, Ohio 44 and U.S. 6. Chardon, OH 44024. Activities include snow bowling, ice putting, snow tag and other legacy games. There will be dogsled and snowmobile demonstrations, with snowmobile rides being offered at Mel Harder Park. In addition, ice sculptures will be carved and on display. Snowman Contest: Each snowman will be sponsored by a local business and decorated by student groups at Chardon High School. Contestants must guess what local business sponsored each snowman for the chance to win a prize.
